While the falsified results of the presidential election on 12/12/2007 in Kenya were disputed, riot and outbreak of violence occurred all over the country especially in the Western parts (Eldoret, Kisumu, Kakamega), Nairobi and at the coast (Mombasa).

More the 1000 people died and more than 300.000 escaped the troubled areas and became internal displaced persons. 250.000 people ended up in often very badly supplied IDP camps, part of them is still living in those camps.

In revenge Luos and other minorities living in the slums of Kibera, Mathare Valley and Kangemi in Nairobi were persecuted and forced to leave.

During the quarrels also the Lutheran Church of Kenya led Health Centre located in the notorious Kibera-Slum was attacked and burned down to the ground.

The people of Kibera are extremely poor and their situation aggravated through the recent outbreak of violence and destruction. Therefore we decided to re-establish the Health Centre together with the local Lutheran Church and support from their partners in the USA and Canada.

On the Church compound we used an existing administration and accommodation building which was relatively easy to reconstruct. One room became a counselling room, another one the pharmacy with enough space to treat patients here as well. The entrance area was converted in a waiting room. A selection of essential medicaments was financed by donors from the US. A second hand ultrasound machine, important especially for the examination of pregnant women and patients with unclear abdominal problems was provided a German Federal Office.

Kenyan doctors are working voluntarily without charge; as well as Dr. Petzhold and Dr. Englisch. Using their spare time they provide improved and frequent medical care to the people in the slum. Furthermore the Kenyan volunteer doctors receive free of charge ultrasound training in order not only to give them kind of motivation also to the benefit of their future patients!
