She was malnourished her body temperature was low and she was close to death. She was rescued by a night watchman who was patrolling the streets. Eastleigh is one of the overpopulated city estates.

The watchman reported the matter to the police who picked up the baby and contacted the Children’s department. The baby was then referred to The Nest Children’s Home as a child in need of care and protection by the Children’s Department.

At the time of admission the baby was estimated to be around 4 months old. At the Home she thrived well except for a health condition of running nose and cough. Due to the high level of air pollution in Nairobi many babies are suffering from cough or develop chronic bronchitis and whizzing frequently.

On 9th July 2012, the Nurse in charge noticed that the Baby suffered from high fever, difficulties in breathing and looked sickly. She rushed the child to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital – the only children’s hospital in Nairobi well equipped enough for infants’ treatment.

After numerous tests the Baby was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. On the third day of hospital admission she was put in Intensive Care Unit due to increasing respiratory distress. She was sedated and ventilated for seven days.

Thankfully her condition stabilized after that and on 17th August she was transferred to a normal ward. She remained in the ward for further observation until 20th July 2012 when she was discharged and put on medication and follow ups to THE NEST. No medical aftereffects have been seen in the child so far. Her social and physical development is in adequate order.

The Baby is now matched with a Kenyan couple for possible adoption. They have meanwhile bonded well with the child.

But the adoption was at risk. The “new” parents have a monthly income amounts to about 300 €. The payment of 7000 Euro for the Hospital and ICU treatment was pending. This was beyond the possibilities of the orphanage as well as of the “new” parents.

Thanks to your donations the bill was settled and Tamy joined her adoptive parents.

Thank you so much!

Baby Tamy was found abandoned at Eastleigh 7th Street (within Nairobi – capital city) on 16th February 2012 at around 4.00 am.
